German Packaging Act: What to do if your LUCID/EPR registration number is invalid

Content:

The German Packaging Act regulates the extended producer responsibility for companies that put packaging into circulation in Germany and serves to ensure the recycling of packaging waste. The obligations for this consist of three steps: packaging licensing with a dual system, registration and data reporting to LUCID.

After successful registration with LUCID, you will receive a registration number which you must provide to your dual system and, since 01 July 2022, also to online marketplaces and fullfilment service providers through which you ship to Germany. If no registration number or an invalid registration number is provided, the online marketplaces and fullfilment service providers may block your account. In this article we explain why your registration number is invalid and what you can do about it.

Why is my registration number invalid?

You have not registered as a producer

In the LUCID registration register there are various options for registration; the important thing here is that you register as a producer. According to the German Packaging Act, a producer is anyone who places commercially filled packaging on the market in Germany for the first time. This means that as a trader and distributor of products you also count as a producer. So if you have registered with LUCID as an inspector, authorised third party or authorised representative, the registration number will not be recognised by online marketplaces and fulfilment service providers.

What do you need to do?

To obtain a valid registration number for online marketplaces and fullfilment service providers, you must now register as a producer with LUCID. You can do this as follows:

  1. Go to the page of the LUCID registration register and click on "Start registration" under "Producer".

  1. In the next step, LUCID will guide you through the registration process, which is divided into eight steps. During registration you will need to provide the following information:
    • The company name with address and contact details,
    • a natural person authorised to represent the company,
    • the German or European tax identification number,
    • all brand names under which you place packaging subject to licensing on the market,
    • Confirmation that you are not a commissioned third party, that participation in a dual system already exists or is in progress, that the information provided is true, and consent to automated data reconciliation.
    • Complete the registration by sending the data.
  2. After successful submission of your data, you will receive a link from LUCID for verification, which you must confirm within 24 hours.
  3. You will then receive an e-mail from LUCID with your registration number. Please also check your spam folder. If you have not received the email or want to check your registration number again at a later date, you can do this at any time in your LUCID account in the dashboard.

  1. Lastly, don't forget to delete the incorrect registration you made first so that there is only one entry for your company as a producer on LUCID.

Different company details

Another reason why the registration number may be recognised as invalid is that the company details at LUCID and the point of entry (e.g. an online marketplace, fullfilment service provider or your dual system) must always match. As soon as discrepancies occur here, your marketplace/fulfilment service provider may not recognise the number.

What do you need to do?

Check the spelling of the following data in your LUCID account and the point to be entered:

  • Company name
  • Street and house number
  • Address suffix
  • Postcode
  • City
  • Country
  • Turnover identification number
  • Tax number

Please also ensure that the details are always entered in the correct fields (e.g. the street and house number must be entered in the same field) and that punctuation marks such as commas, full stops or hyphens are used identically in both places.

Registration not fully completed

If you have not received an email from LUCID with your registration number and you cannot view a registration number in your LUCID Dashboard, this may be because you have not fully completed the registration process.

What do you need to do?

You now have two options:

  1. Try logging into the LUCID registration register with the email address you are using. If this does not work, it appears that you do not yet have a customer account with LUCID. To register, complete the registration process as described above from step 1 to 8. You can find the exact instructions here.
  2. If the login to LUCID has worked and you can view your customer account, check that you have already provided all the mandatory information. The following data must be provided:
    • The company name with address and contact details,
    • a natural person authorised to represent the company,
    • the German or European tax identification number,
    • all brand names under which you place packaging subject to licensing on the market.

If necessary, complete the necessary data under the menu item "Master data" and check whether you receive a verification link from LUCID by e-mail. If this is not the case, you can request it again. To do this, log in to the LUCID registration register on the start page and then go to "Resend activation e-mail" in your customer account.

LUCID verification e-mail not received

After successfully registering with LUCID you will receive an email with a verification link, you must confirm this within 24 hours. If you have not received the e-mail, please check your spam folder first. Furthermore, there may be time delays with some email providers.

What do you have to do?

If you still have not received an e-mail with verification link on the next working day, please proceed as follows:

  1. Log in to your LUCID account.
  2. Click on the option "Resend activation email".
  3. Check your spam folder or other subfolders in your email account.

If you are also unsuccessful here and have not received a verification link after one working day, you can contact LUCID customer support by email or have your IT put the IP addresses on the so-called whitelist by the email provider. You can find more information on this here.
